Traffic Disruptions and Road Closures on Berliner Straße Starting May 4
Wiesbaden's water main overhaul begins with traffic disruptions ahead
ESWE Versorgung, Wiesbaden's municipal utility provider, is replacing a key water main supplying the city center. The work will focus on the area around Gustav-Stresemann-Ring and Berliner Straße as part of ongoing maintenance to the city's infrastructure network.
Construction has already begun in the green strip along Gustav-Stresemann-Ring, where a critical pipeline ensuring the city center's drinking water supply is located. As a result, Wettiner Straße has recently been closed to traffic.
Aging Pipes and Risk of Failures
The pipes being replaced date back to 1953–1973 and have an internal diameter of 40 centimeters. Over the past years, there have been sporadic disruptions—most notably in 2001, 2022, and as recently as 2025. Given this history, ESWE Versorgung has opted for a comprehensive renewal of this pipeline section.
Scope of Work and Traffic Restrictions
The project covers approximately 800 meters, stretching from Gustav-Stresemann-Ring to Berliner Straße. Starting Monday, May 4, Berliner Straße near the BRITA Arena will be affected by traffic restrictions.
During peak hours, one lane heading out of the city will be closed, depending on construction progress. In off-peak periods, two lanes may temporarily be unavailable. Motorists should expect delays.
Timeline and Objectives
Construction is expected to be completed by winter. The goal is to enhance the reliability of the water supply system and bring the infrastructure up to modern standards.
