During construction work on the A44 motorway near Sontra this morning, two workers were injured in an on-site accident. According to preliminary findings—subject to further investigation by the Occupational Safety Authority of the Kassel Regional Council—a steel beam in the tunnel gave way, dislodging a large rock that struck and injured the two men. A 35-year-old worker from Bosnia and Herzegovina sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by rescue helicopter to a hospital. The second worker, a 36-year-old Polish national, suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters from Sontra and surrounding districts responded to the scene. The Occupational Safety Authority will inspect the accident site tomorrow to determine the exact cause of the incident.
