Suspicious fires and vandalism strike Vogelsberg district in one night

Two separate incidents of vandalism and suspicious fires occurred in the Vogelsberg district late on Thursday, July 31. Straw bales were set alight in Hegersdorf and Maar, while road signs in Engelrod were damaged with spray paint. Police are now seeking witnesses to help with their investigations. The first incident took place near a harvested grain field along the R4 bike path close to Reuterser Straße in Hegersdorf. Multiple straw bales caught fire in the early hours of Thursday morning. Authorities have not yet determined the cause but are treating the blaze as suspicious.

Later that night, at around 4 a.m., another straw bale burned in a field near Am Ritterberg in the Maar district. Investigators are examining whether the two fires are linked and have not ruled out arson. Meanwhile, at approximately 10:45 p.m., two unknown males vandalised road signs along Schottener Straße in Engelrod. The suspects used gold and black spray paint before fleeing the scene on a scooter. They caused around €300 in damage and were described as youthful-looking males with dark hair, dressed in black clothing. Police have urged anyone with information about either the fires or the vandalism to come forward. Witnesses can contact Alsfeld Police Station at 06631/974-0 or Lauterbach Police Station at 06641/971-0. Reports can also be submitted online at www.polizei.hessen.de.

The incidents remain under investigation, with authorities focusing on possible connections between the fires. Anyone who saw suspicious activity near the affected areas is encouraged to provide details. The police continue to gather evidence to identify those responsible.
