Cottbus Tops Germany's Economic Dynamism Ranking in New Study
Cottbus has been named Germany’s most economically dynamic city in a recent study. The findings, first reported by Der Spiegel, place the Brandenburg city ahead of all others for progress over the past two years. Mayor Tobias Schick sees the ranking as confirmation of the city’s ongoing strategy. The study was carried out by IW Consult, a research institute linked to the German Economy. It measured economic growth, innovation, and structural change across cities. Cottbus topped the list, outperforming all competitors in the dynamism ranking.
Hanno Kempermann, an analyst at IW Consult, pointed to Cottbus as a model for successful transformation. He described the city as an urban hub for knowledge and innovation in Lusatia. Its economic activities now align closely with green priorities, including hydrogen, electrification, and renewable energy.
Home to Brandenburg’s only technical university, Cottbus has built a reputation for research and development. Kempermann noted that the city proves structural change can work when paired with targeted investments. The top ranking reinforces Cottbus’ position as a leader in Germany’s economic shift. The city’s focus on sustainability and innovation has delivered measurable results. Officials now plan to maintain this direction in the years ahead.
