Rising Costs and Growing Uncertainty Hit Businesses Hard: Middle East Conflict Takes a Toll on the Economy—Including Here in the Southern Upper Rhine

Southern Upper Rhine businesses grapple with Middle East crisis fallout

A snap survey by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) reveals that around 85 percent of companies in the Southern Upper Rhine region report noticeable impacts from the crisis, according to the local Chamber of Commerce (IHK). Nationwide, roughly 2,400 businesses participated in the survey, including 372 from Baden-Württemberg.

Transport and logistics costs have been particularly hard hit. More than 60 percent of companies say surging freight rates are straining their operations. One telling example: The cost of shipping a container from China to Germany has risen sharply in recent months, the IHK reports.

Indirect effects—such as higher energy prices and tight logistics capacity—are further exacerbating the situation. Export-driven sectors like mechanical engineering and automotive manufacturing are feeling the pressure most acutely.

Many businesses are already taking action: building up inventories, adjusting their strategies, or postponing investments. At the same time, companies are increasingly seeking out new markets, including in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The IHK Southern Upper Rhine states that it is providing advisory services and networking platforms to support businesses through this challenging period.
