Mystery fireworks over Wiesbaden spark legal questions before approval confirmed
Big excitement in Wiesbaden: On Friday evening (September 19), many were surprised by a sudden fireworks display. Many readers wondered why, in the middle of the year and seemingly without cause, fireworks were being set off. As it turned out, there was no connection to larger festivals.
The Reason Behind It
But where exactly was the fireworks display? Reader Holger located it in the 'city center' with a 'low flight height' and an 'unexpectedly long duration.' Reader Chris pinpointed the spectacle more precisely: It was visible in the 'direction of the castle square or Kurhaus.' And reader Holla said: 'I was also surprised. I opened the window and at first, it sounded like it was in the city center, then suddenly I had the impression it was at the Sedanplatz.'
The question that many were likely asking was whether the fireworks were legal and registered with the city, or not officially authorized. The city of Wiesbaden itself sheds light on this. In response to *Merkurist*, press spokesperson David Bartelt confirms the fireworks display over Wiesbaden on the aforementioned Friday. Specifically, it took place in the area of the Emser Straße. It was 'a private fireworks display, approved by the environmental department.'
Fireworks that are not approved by the city can potentially be very expensive for the 'organizer,' as the press office states. Such a fireworks display could be punished with a fine of up to 50,000 euros.
