Homeowner in Brachttal escapes €50,000 scam by fake tradesmen

A homeowner in Brachttal narrowly avoided losing nearly €50,000 after itinerant workers attempted to scam them. The fraudsters posed as tradesmen, starting with a small repair job before escalating their demands. Police are now investigating the incident as suspected extortion.

The scam began with an offer to fix gutters for a few hundred euros. Once on the property, the workers claimed to have found serious roof damage. They then demanded a four-figure down payment to start the supposed repairs.

The total amount requested quickly rose to just under €50,000. Fortunately, a bank employee spotted the unusually large transaction and flagged it as fraudulent. The payment was blocked before any money changed hands. This case follows a wider trend in the region. Over the past two years (2024–2025), around 150 similar fraud cases were reported in Südhessen, mainly in Darmstadt, Offenbach, and Main-Taunus-Kreis. In response, the Hessische Polizei launched a public awareness campaign in December 2025 to warn residents about such scams. The Southeast Hesse Police Headquarters is now handling the investigation. Authorities have urged homeowners to remain cautious when dealing with unexpected offers from tradesmen.

The attempted fraud in Brachttal was stopped thanks to the bank's intervention. Police continue to investigate and have warned the public about similar schemes. Residents are advised to verify the credentials of any tradespeople before agreeing to work or payments.
