North Rhine-Westphalia's harsh winter may spike energy bills this year
This winter has brought residents of North Rhine-Westphalia a relatively high amount of snow and ice—and temperatures up to four degrees below the 30-year average, according to meteorological services. That likely means households have been using more heating than usual. For this reason, Stadtwerke Willich, the local utility provider, recommends reviewing and adjusting current prepayments for electricity, gas, and district heating.
A so-called consumption simulation can help determine how much energy has been used so far this season. Customers only need their latest meter readings and access to the provider's online service portal. Those without an account can set one up in minutes using their customer number.
Of course, customers who prefer not to use digital services can request a consumption simulation and adjust their prepayments by phone or in person at the Service Center on Gießerallee 24. Even those who manage their energy usage online but want extra reassurance about their new prepayment amount can seek advice by phone or at the Service Center at any time.
Many electricity and gas contracts run until September 30 each year, so after a winter like this one, it's especially worth checking prepayments to avoid an unexpected bill at the end of the billing period.
Stadtwerke Willich advises running a consumption simulation once a quarter to keep track of usage. While individual cost increases may seem minor, they can add up and put a real strain on a household budget. On the other hand, upgrades like a new heating system, energy-efficient appliances, or a child moving out can reduce consumption—and lower prepayments can ease the financial burden.
