When do I choose? Digital voting aid starts in 27 municipalities - Hesse's New Digital Tool Helps Voters Match Their Views Before 15 March Elections
A new digital tool called Voto has launched ahead of Hesse's municipal elections on 15 March. It helps voters compare their views on local issues with those of political parties. Over 200,000 people used the platform during the 2021 digital elections in the region.
This year, Voto is available in 27 cities and districts, including Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Offenbach, Wiesbaden, and Hanau. Voters can now test how their opinions align with party positions before casting their ballots.
Voto works by presenting users with statements on local policy topics. They can approve or reject each one, then see how their answers match up with different parties. The tool aims to simplify decision-making for voters unfamiliar with party manifestos.
Alongside Voto, another digital guide called the Vote Matcher (Wahl-O-Mat) is also running. This version covers Frankfurt, Fulda, Marburg, and Kassel. Both tools focus on the 2026 municipal elections, though they follow a court ruling on voting procedures from previous years.
The platform does not provide details on specific issues like car-free zones or expanded public surveillance. Instead, it offers a broad comparison of party stances on general local policies. Voters can access it online before polling day to make more informed choices.
Voto and the Vote Matcher are now live for Hesse's upcoming municipal elections. The tools let residents check their political alignment before voting on 15 March. Over 200,000 users relied on Voto in 2021, suggesting strong demand for digital voting aids this time around.
