Gifhorn District's Municipal Supervisory Authority Approves 2026 Budget Without Restrictions

The municipal supervisory authority of Gifhorn District has approved the 2026 budget adopted by the city council on January 19, 2026, without reservations. This greenlight also covers the planned borrowing of approximately €39 million for investments and investment promotion measures, as announced in a city press release issued this Friday.

"Now we can really get started on the projects that matter to us," said Mayor Matthias Nerlich. Among the key initiatives are the construction of a two-court sports hall at the South Sports Center, road renovations, and the reconstruction of the shooting range—just a few of many planned undertakings. "I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to drafting the 2026 budget, especially the team in the Finance Department."

Every Penny Scrutinized

The statement further notes that, through extensive budget negotiations within the administration and alongside local politicians, virtually every cent was examined and every project reassessed. "In a time of major financial challenges, the priority is clear: making cuts and setting the right priorities. And we've succeeded in doing just that," Nerlich emphasized. From the outset, he was firm that there would be no tax increases for residents and that allocated funds for discretionary services would continue to flow.

The 2026 budget will become fully legally binding after the public display period ends on May 7, 2026.
