Braunschweig: City Hall Renovation Remains on Schedule Despite Asbestos Incident
Braunschweig's Stadthalle renovation stays on track despite asbestos scare
The renovation of Braunschweig's Stadthalle (City Hall) is progressing as planned, with an asbestos-related incident in the main auditorium having no impact on the scheduled reopening date, according to a press release from Struktur-Fƶrderung Braunschweig GmbH, the project's development agency.
Cleanup of the affected areas is now in its final phase, following intensive efforts. The incident occurred in late January during work on the gallery ceilings in the main hall, the statement confirmed.
Loosened Asbestos Ceiling Panel Triggers Response
While removing non-hazardous ceiling elements, an unexpected asbestos-contaminated edge stripācovering roughly 15 square metersādetached and shattered. Specialized hazardous materials experts working nearby, equipped with appropriate protective gear, responded immediately and in full compliance with safety protocols. The entire affected interior area was promptly cordoned off and sealed to prevent contamination.
The press release emphasized that at no point was the public at risk. The local trade supervision authority was notified, as is standard procedure in such cases. In addition to the existing experts and firms already on-site for the renovation, further specialized companies and an independent assessor were brought in to manage the asbestos remediation.
2028 Opening Date Still on Track
Most of the contaminated zones have now been fully cleared of asbestos fibers, with the remaining areas being systematically decontaminated. Struktur-Fƶrderung Braunschweig GmbH has confirmed that the 2028 opening remains achievable, though construction sequences have been adjusted accordingly. The independent assessor overseeing the project is monitoring post-cleanup clearance measurements to ensure safety.
"Thanks to our highly experienced handling of the various hazardous materials encountered during the Stadthalle's renovation, we were able to resolve this incident professionally and minimize the damage," said Natascha Wessling, managing director of Struktur-Fƶrderung Braunschweig GmbH. "Asbestos was a common building material when the hall was constructed, so we had thoroughly prepared for such scenarios before work began. Our pre-established remediation strategies allowed us to quickly adapt on-site construction processes, ensuring that work in other areas of the Stadthalle could continue without interruption."
The project's combined construction insurance has reportedly agreed to cover the costs of the incident.
