Germany Overhauls Housing Benefits to Save €1 Billion by 2027

Germany’s Housing Ministry is planning changes to housing benefit payments to meet strict budget cuts. The move aims to save €1 billion by 2027 while keeping support fair and targeted. Around 1.2 million households currently rely on these payments each year. The ministry has been tasked with reducing its spending by €1 billion in the 2027 federal financial plan. Instead of cutting social housing programmes or construction funding, officials will restructure how housing benefits are calculated and distributed. The goal is to make the system more precise without reducing overall support.

This year, €2.4 billion has already been set aside for housing benefits. The adjustments will focus on ensuring payments are allocated efficiently. Authorities have stressed that no reductions in social housing projects or related funding are planned as part of the savings effort.

The changes will reshape how housing benefits are managed but will not affect the number of eligible households. The ministry expects the new approach to maintain fairness while meeting financial targets. The updated system is set to take effect in the coming years.
