Germany forms crisis task force to slash food and fuel costs

The fuel tax on diesel must now be temporarily suspended," Joachim Rukwied, president of the German Farmers' Association, told the Rheinische Post (Friday edition). "Urgent action is needed to ensure food production can continue."

Rukwied added that the sharp rise in diesel prices—"as well as soaring fertilizer costs"—were "choking the life out of agriculture." The timing is especially painful ahead of spring planting, he said. "Taxes must come down," the farmers' leader insisted.

The government's newly formed task force will include representatives from the Farmers' Association and the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (VZBV). Alongside high fuel prices, the discussions will address rising food costs, with proposals on the table—including cutting VAT to 0% on staple foods.
