80 Percent of MV Pharmacies Closed on Monday - German pharmacies shut down in mass protest over frozen reimbursement rates
Hundreds of pharmacies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will close their doors this Monday as part of a nationwide protest. Pharmacists are demanding urgent action from the government to raise reimbursement rates, which have remained frozen since 2013. The strike highlights growing frustration over rising costs and unfulfilled promises from the governing coalition.
The protest, organised by the ABDA (German Pharmacists' Association), will see over 80 percent of non-emergency pharmacies in the region shut for the day. While no exact figure has been given, reports suggest most pharmacies across Germany will join the action. Emergency services, however, will remain unaffected, with over 1,000 pharmacies staying open around the clock.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania currently has around 350 pharmacies, many of which will participate in the strike. Pharmacists from the region will also travel to Berlin for a demonstration, alongside colleagues from Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Lower Saxony. Protests are set to take place in Berlin, München, Düsseldorf, and Hannover. The public can find the nearest open pharmacy via the Chamber of Pharmacists' online portal. Authorities have advised patients to delay non-urgent visits until Tuesday. Pharmacies play a key role in Germany's decentralised medicine reserve, making their services critical even during disputes. The core issue remains unadjusted reimbursement rates, which have not increased in over a decade despite soaring operational costs. Pharmacists are now pressing the coalition to honour its pledge to reform fees without further delay.
The one-day closure aims to push the government into addressing long-standing financial pressures on pharmacies. With emergency services still available, the protest seeks to balance public safety with the need for fair compensation. The outcome of the demonstrations could determine whether further action will follow.
