German Bank Employee Jailed for Stealing €4.5 Million Over Seven Years
A German savings bank employee has been jailed for stealing €4.5 million from customer accounts over nearly seven years. The theft, which lasted from September 2018 to June 2025, affected around 1,200 clients before the crime was uncovered.
The employee, a retail banking specialist, systematically took cash from the till and manipulated foreign currency transactions to hide the missing money. Her role on the bank's audit committee helped delay detection, as internal checks failed to spot the irregularities.
At first, she tried to repay what she had stolen but eventually could not keep up. Investigations later revealed that the funds were spent on everyday costs like groceries, bills, taxis, and her children's expenses. A court has now sentenced her to four years in prison for the embezzlement.
The case exposed weaknesses in the bank's oversight, allowing the theft to continue undetected for years. The convicted employee will serve a four-year term, while the institution faces the task of recovering the stolen funds and restoring trust among affected customers.
