€50M 14leafs Fund Launches to Fuel Lower Franconia's Tech Startups

A new venture capital fund called 14leafs has launched in Lower Franconia to support early-stage, tech-driven startups. The initiative aims to tackle the region’s shortage of early financing for research-heavy businesses. Backed by the University of Würzburg, Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg, and StellaVent Capital, the fund will focus on turning local innovations into scalable companies. The fund has set a target volume of up to €50 million. It will primarily invest in startups at the pre-seed to Series A stages, with initial sums ranging from €100,000 to around €1 million. Over its lifetime, 14leafs plans to back 40 to 50 startups, providing not just capital but also business expertise, networks, and access to further investors.

While the fund prioritises regional startups, it remains open to companies from outside the area if their technology and business models prove compelling. Its investment focus spans life sciences, health, deep tech, and digital tech sectors. The goal is to ensure that value creation, jobs, and talent stay within Lower Franconia. Prof. Dr. Paul Pauli, President of the University of Würzburg (JMU), highlighted the fund’s role in bridging the gap between research and entrepreneurship. He noted that it builds on the university’s strong research foundations. Jochen Schönleber, deputy CEO of Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg, added that Lower Franconia has plenty of strong ideas but struggles with a lack of capital to scale them. The fund aims to fill this gap. StellaVent Capital will manage 14leafs, which is designed to accelerate the transformation of regional innovations into high-growth businesses. The long-term vision is to establish Lower Franconia as a recognised hub for tech-driven startups.

14leafs will support startups with funding, expertise, and industry connections. The fund’s backers believe it will help retain talent and economic value in the region. By focusing on scalable, research-intensive businesses, the initiative seeks to strengthen Lower Franconia’s position in the tech and innovation sectors.
