Deutschlandticket hits 14.6 million users despite rising subscription costs

Germany’s Deutschlandticket has seen steady growth since its launch in May 2023. Initially priced at €49 per month, the scheme has expanded to over 14.6 million subscribers today. Alongside rising demand, the ticket’s cost has also climbed, with further increases planned for the future. The Deutschlandticket first went on sale on 1 May 2023, offering nationwide public transport for €49 per month. By early 2024, subscriber numbers had reached just over 11 million. The price then rose to €58, but demand continued to grow.

By the start of 2025, subscriptions had climbed to 13.5 million. The latest figures show 14.6 million people now holding the ticket. Despite the price increase to €63 in 2025, the scheme remains popular. The ticket has also had a measurable environmental impact. In 2023, it cut car travel by 5%, reducing CO₂ emissions by 6.5 million metric tons. A further 2.5 million metric tons were saved in 2024. Most users were already occasional public transport passengers before switching, with only 5% being entirely new to the system. The programme is set to run until at least the end of 2029, ensuring long-term access to affordable travel across Germany.

The Deutschlandticket has grown from 11 million to 14.6 million users in under two years. Its price has risen from €49 to €63, yet subscriptions continue to increase. The scheme has also contributed to lower car use and significant emissions cuts since its introduction.
