Banco del Bienestar recovers after attacks with digital push and branch reopenings
Banco del Bienestar has reopened most of its branches after violent attacks in February disrupted services. The bank is now pushing for digital transactions while ensuring welfare payments continue without delay. An updated mobile app, set to launch in May, will also expand payment options for users.
On 22 February 2024, a federal operation targeting CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes led to widespread vandalism at Banco del Bienestar branches. At least 53 locations were damaged, with Jalisco and Michoacán suffering the worst destruction. Twelve branches in these states required urgent repairs, including structural fixes and reinforced security.
By March 2024, all affected branches had reopened, allowing the bank to resume pension and welfare disbursements. Víctor Manuel Lamoyi, the bank's director general, confirmed that social benefit payments were back on track. The bank is now encouraging beneficiaries to shift from cash withdrawals to digital transactions. Debit card usage is being promoted as a safer alternative. To support this, a new mobile app will launch in May, offering transfers, SPEI payments, CoDi, and DiMo services. Additional features will be added gradually.
The bank's recovery efforts have restored services to affected communities. With digital tools expanding and branches fully operational, beneficiaries can now access payments more securely. The upcoming app aims to reduce reliance on cash while improving transaction convenience.
