Zharkyn Zhuparkhan Revives Kazakh Poetic Tradition Through Mentorship and Performance
Born in 1987, Zharkyn grew up in those years when every family still listened to
Zhuparkhan’s journey began in 2007 when he first competed in an aitys tournament. Under the guidance of respected akyns like Amanzhol Zagypar, Dasten Baimukanov, and Zhursin Yerman, he honed his craft. Before that, he studied journalism and Kazakh literature at M. Kozybayev University, later writing for local publications such as Kyzylzhar Nur and Solenstik Kazakhstan.
Since 2013, he has led efforts at the Regional Center for Folk Art, overseeing a department focused on poetic and musical talent. That same year, he founded the Yerk Askarov School of Young Akyns, which now has over 50 students across branches in Kyzylzhar and Ualikhanov districts. Among its graduates are rising names like Madina Serik, Sultan Zharkynuly, and Nurgisa Kaiyrtai.
His reputation as a master of aitys comes from his sharp wit, deep ideas, and respect for opponents. These qualities have earned him victories in major competitions, establishing him as a benchmark in the field. In November 2025, he presented his solo evening, Kyzylzhar – Kyzyrbasy, where he unveiled his book Shabytty Shaqai Tüsinde, a reflection on his inner world.
Zhuparkhan’s mission remains clear: to create opportunities for young talent. He believes in giving children the confidence to perform, knowing they have the support of experienced akyns behind them. Beyond competitions, he continues to develop new projects that keep the tradition alive.
Through his school, performances, and mentorship, Zhuparkhan has strengthened the role of aitys in modern Kazakh culture. His work ensures that the art form, once a radio staple, now thrives among new generations. With ongoing projects and a growing network of students, his influence on the region’s poetic landscape is set to expand.
