WWII Bomb Safely Detonated in Hanau After Massive Emergency Operation

A 250-kilogram World War II bomb was safely detonated in Hanau’s Großauheim district on December 11, 2025. The controlled explosion took place at 12:02 PM in Lise-Meitner-Straße, following a large-scale operation involving multiple emergency services. Authorities have since confirmed that all road closures in the area have been lifted.

The operation brought together volunteer and professional fire departments, the Hessian bomb disposal service, and the Darmstadt Regional Council. The Technical Relief Agency, Deutsche Bahn, Hessian Police, and city police also played key roles. Mayor Kaminsky and Councilor Isabelle Hemsley later praised the coordination and expertise shown by all involved.

The blast wave caused relatively minor damage to nearby buildings. Most properties remain habitable, though one apartment suffered severe structural harm and is currently uninhabitable. Rail services in the area have now returned to normal operation.

For residents affected by the incident, the Darmstadt Regional Council has set up a dedicated phone service. Those needing to report damage can call +49 6151 126100 for assistance.

The successful detonation marks the end of a carefully managed operation. Emergency services and local authorities worked together to minimise disruption and ensure public safety. Residents can now access support for any damage caused by the controlled explosion.
