Bomb Discovered in Gelnhausen - WWII Bomb Found During Railway Work Halts Construction in Germany

A World War II-era bomb has been discovered during railway expansion work in Meerholz, Gelnhausen. The discovery prompted authorities to activate a crisis response team, ensuring public safety while plans for disposal are finalized.

Construction crews found the unexploded ordnance in the Main-Kinzig district. The site was immediately secured, with officials confirming no immediate danger to nearby residents.

Specialists from the German Navy’s Kampfschwimmer unit—the 5th Mine Clearance Unit based in Wilhelmshaven—will handle the operation. They are scheduled to arrive on January 16, 2026, to assess and defuse the device. Experts will gather on-site Friday morning to review the situation. A final decision on how to safely neutralize the bomb is expected later that day.

The bomb’s discovery has temporarily halted construction. Authorities will proceed with controlled disposal once the specialists complete their assessment. Residents have been assured that all necessary precautions are in place.
