WWII Bomb Detonation in Hanau Leaves One Apartment Uninhabitable

A 250-kilogram World War II bomb was safely detonated in Hanau’s Großauheim district on Sunday. The controlled explosion led to minor damage in nearby apartments.

The operation began after the unexploded ordnance was discovered, prompting evacuations and road closures. Emergency teams, led by Thorsten Wünschmann, head of Public Order in Hanau, coordinated the detonation to minimise risks. The blast wave caused mostly superficial harm to surrounding structures, with just one apartment left unsafe for residents.

The detonation marked the end of a carefully managed operation. While most apartments sustained only light damage, the single uninhabitable apartment remains the most significant impact. Residents can now report any concerns through the council’s helpline, ensuring continued support after the incident.
