Wiesbaden's €51M eco-school breaks ground with 2028 opening planned

A new four-form primary school is set to rise in Wiesbaden's Wettinerstraße area. The project, costing over €50 million, will replace the old gymnasium at the corner of Balthasar-Neumann-Straße and Brunhildenstraße. Once complete, it will serve around 400 pupils with modern facilities and a focus on sustainability.

Construction is due to start in July 2026, with the school expected to open by December 2028. WiBau GmbH will handle the build and later lease the premises to the city. The design includes cluster learning zones, team rooms, and open study spaces, alongside a central hall and a cafeteria capable of serving 360 meals daily.

The new building will mix reinforced concrete with solid wood, topped by green roofs and photovoltaic panels. A two-court gymnasium will serve both the school and local clubs, while its roof will function as an additional schoolyard. Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende (SPD) highlighted the project as a key investment, providing modern education, shorter travel times for pupils, and sustainable growth for the city.

The total budget stands at €51.2 million, with construction alone accounting for €29.4 million. No comparable school projects in Wiesbaden or other major Hessian cities have been recorded in recent years.

The school's completion in late 2028 will add a modern educational hub to Wiesbaden. Its eco-friendly design and shared gymnasium aim to benefit both students and the wider community. The city's lease agreement with WiBau GmbH ensures long-term use of the facility.
