Wiesbaden’s €32M Eco Civic Center Breaks Ground in 2026 After Decade of Planning

Wiesbaden is set to embark on a significant project, the Kastel/Kostheim Civic Center, with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony planned for early 2026. The €32 million project, which aims to set ecological benchmarks, emerged from an extensive public participation process that began in 2015.

The civic center, designed by the Düsseldorf-based architectural firm Hentrich, Petschnigg & Partner, will serve as a modern meeting place for both neighborhoods. It will incorporate several eco-friendly features, including heat pumps, solar panels, green roofs, and rainwater retention systems, with recycled concrete also being used. The city aims to foster a resource-conscious mindset through this project.

Construction approval has been granted, and tenders for earthworks are currently being issued. However, structural reviews are still pending. The official construction start is expected in 2025 in Mainz-Wiesbaden. The city has opted for a shared, multifunctional new build, which will serve as a space for social gatherings, culture, and community.

The Kastel/Kostheim Civic Center, with its ecological focus and multifunctional design, is poised to become a significant landmark in Wiesbaden. Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende hailed the decision to proceed with the project as a major milestone, marking a step towards creating a vibrant, resource-conscious city.
