Wiesbaden’s electronic bus stops leave passengers stranded with faulty displays

Passengers in Wiesbaden are grappling with persistent problems at electronic bus stops. Several screens operated by ESWE Verkehr have been displaying incorrect, frozen, or blank information for days, leaving commuters relying on outdated or misleading details about their journeys. Three bus stops in the city centre are under particular scrutiny due to frequent malfunctions. The display at Platz der Deutschen Einheit is slated for replacement as early as this spring. Many of the affected screens are over a decade old, with repairs carried out as resources permit. The issues stem partly from complex data exchanges with external providers. Mainzer Mobilität, which supplies information for shared routes, sometimes causes errors due to the intricacy of the system. When buses are cancelled at short notice, ESWE may fail to update replacement services in time, leading to situations where buses run despite being marked as cancelled. ESWE Verkehr has acknowledged the problems but insists there are no large-scale outages. The company attributes the faults to automated processes and data from external partners. In the meantime, passengers can use QR codes on the stops to access an online network map for real-time departure updates. While ESWE Verkehr continues to address the malfunctions, some displays remain unreliable. The planned replacement of older screens may help reduce future disruptions. For now, commuters are advised to check online updates when facing unclear information at affected stops.
