Wiesbaden votes today in pivotal city council and advisory board elections

Wiesbaden residents are heading to the polls today, March 15, to elect a new city council, district advisory boards, and the Immigrant Advisory Council. The vote comes as the city faces key challenges, including housing shortages, transport upgrades, and climate protection.

Fifteen parties and voter groups are competing for seats, with early signs pointing to a potential shift in political power. The previous black-red-green alliance has already been voted out, paving the way for new coalition talks.

The 2021 elections saw the CDU secure 23.2% of the vote, narrowly ahead of the Greens at 21.7% and the SPD with 19.7%. The FDP followed with 10.8%, while the AfD took 8.0% and the Left Party 5.9%. Smaller parties and independents claimed the remaining share.

Since then, Wiesbaden has been governed by a stable CDU-SPD coalition under Mayor Dirk Husemann (CDU). But today's election could reshape the balance of power. Early projections suggest a possible 'traffic light plus' or 'traffic light-Left' alliance—comprising the SPD, Greens, FDP, and Left Party—could emerge as a viable alternative. Voter turnout has varied sharply across districts. Smaller suburbs recorded higher participation, while inner-city areas showed stronger support for the Greens. The CDU, meanwhile, maintained its lead in several suburban neighbourhoods. Key campaign issues include affordable housing, improved public transport, climate action, and the development of new neighbourhoods. District advisory board results also reflected these local priorities, with differing political leanings across Wiesbaden's diverse areas.

The election results will determine whether the current CDU-SPD coalition holds or if a new alliance takes charge. With housing, transport, and climate policy at the forefront, the next city council will face immediate challenges.

Final seat allocations and coalition negotiations are expected to begin once all votes are counted.
