Wiesbaden rolls out traffic fixes after A671 bridge closure chaos

Wiesbaden has introduced new traffic measures in Mainz-Kostheim after the closure of the A671's VorlandbrĂźcke. The bridge shut on 20 March 2026, forcing drivers onto alternative routes. Authorities are now adjusting signals, enforcing parking rules, and monitoring flow to ease congestion.

Since the Vorlandbrücke closed, drivers have been diverted via the B40 and Kommerzienrat-Disch-Brücke. Left turns from the B40 onto the bridge remain banned during weekday rush hours (7–9 am and 3–7 pm). These restrictions aimed to reduce gridlock but still caused delays in surrounding streets.

Local police began directing traffic at key intersections last Thursday afternoon. They have also increased patrols in the historic town centre to fine illegal parking. No-stopping zones were set up in multiple spots to keep lanes clear.

The road traffic authority is testing longer green lights for vehicles exiting Winterstraße at its junction with Hauptstraße and Maaraustraße. Waste collection services have shifted pickup times to avoid peak hours. While these steps have already improved flow, officials admit no perfect fix exists to fully divert motorway traffic from local roads.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area where possible. The combined measures—signal changes, parking enforcement, and waste schedule adjustments—have shown early signs of success. Authorities will continue monitoring the situation as the bridge closure remains in place.
