Wiesbaden Museum Unites Literature and Volcanoes in a Free January Tour
The Museum Wiesbaden will host a free guided tour on January 15, 2026, blending literature and natural history. Titled 'Nature Meets Literature', the event invites the public to explore volcanoes, explorers, and artistic fantasies through stories and exhibits. Two experts—a literature scholar and a biologist—will lead the evening’s discussions.
Dr. Katharina Schlicht, a specialist in German and English literature, will guide visitors through themes of fire mountains and adventure. Her approach mixes humour with deep literary insights, bringing historical figures like Vesuvius chronicler William Hamilton to life. Alongside her, biologist Fritz Geller-Grimm will share rare texts from the museum’s library, including works by Hamilton and 17th-century scholar Athanasius Kircher.
The tour also highlights Lady Hamilton, whose connection to volcanoes extended beyond art into natural observation and social influence. Her role in shaping perceptions of nature and culture will be a key focus. After the 6:00 PM event, attendees can visit the museum’s permanent exhibition, 'The Aesthetics of Nature'. Spread across five themed rooms, it merges artistic and scientific perspectives on the natural world.
The event takes place at Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 2, Wiesbaden, with no admission fee. Visitors will leave with a deeper understanding of how literature and science intersect in the museum’s collections. The tour’s mix of storytelling and expert commentary aims to make history engaging for all.
