Wetterau district hit by scams, vandalism and break-ins in 24 hours
A series of incidents in the Wetterau district has left residents on alert. In Bad Vilbel, an elderly woman lost over ā¬25,000 to a phone scammer posing as a police officer. Meanwhile, election posters were vandalised in Bad Nauheim, and two separate break-ins occurred in Butzbachāthough little was stolen in either case.
The fraud in Bad Vilbel unfolded on Wednesday when the victim received a call from someone claiming to be an officer. The scammer told her that her daughter had been involved in a deadly traffic accident and needed bail money. Under pressure, the woman was instructed to gather cash and jewellery from her home while staying on the line.
Shortly after, a supposed colleague of the scammer arrived at her door and collected the itemsāvalued at more than ā¬25,000. The deception only came to light when the woman contacted her actual daughter hours later. Police have warned the public to never share financial details over the phone and to hang up immediately if a call seems suspicious. Authorities also noted a rise in similar phishing scams, where fraudsters impersonate official bodies like the IHK or tax offices to steal personal and banking information. In Bad Nauheim, election posters along Wisselsheimer HauptstraĆe were damaged on Wednesday evening. A witness described seeing someone in a dark jacket and a light brown cap interfering with the signs. No arrests have been made so far. Over in Butzbach, two separate incidents were reported between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. The side window of a brown Mercedes 200 D was smashed, though nothing appeared to be taken. In another case, thieves broke into a construction trailer but only stole empty deposit bottles.
The elderly victim in Bad Vilbel suffered a significant financial loss, while local police continue to investigate the vandalism and break-ins. Residents are being urged to stay vigilant against fraud attempts and to report any suspicious activity immediately. No further details on potential suspects have been released at this time.
