Welding sparks used car fire, causing €100K damage in Germany

A car fire in Langgöns-Dornholzhausen caused extensive damage to a workshop and a nearby cider mill. The blaze, triggered by welding work on a used car for sale, resulted in losses of at least €100,000. Meanwhile, police in Gießen are searching for a cyclist who collided with an 11-year-old girl and fled the scene.

The fire broke out on Blankweg when sparks from welding on a used car ignited insulation between the underbody and the car’s interior. Flames quickly spread to the workshop and an adjacent cider mill. No injuries were reported, but the financial toll is significant.

In a separate incident, an 11-year-old schoolgirl was knocked down by a cyclist at the intersection of Am Schwimmbad, Fortweg, and Zur MĂŒhle in Pohlheim-Hausen. The collision happened at 11:00 AM on 17 November. The girl suffered facial abrasions and scrapes on her hands.

The cyclist, described as a tall man around 190 cm, wore dark clothing and had a black cloth covering his face. He was riding a black men’s bicycle and fled towards the local swimming pool after the crash. Police have urged anyone with information to contact the Gießen-SĂŒd station.

For media inquiries, the Mittelhessen Police Headquarters Press and Public Relations office is handling requests. The press spokesperson for the case is Alisa Jockel. Outside office hours, the duty police officer can be reached by phone or email.

The car fire investigation continues, with no injuries but substantial property damage confirmed. Authorities are also actively searching for the cyclist involved in the hit-and-run. Witnesses or those with details about either incident are encouraged to come forward.
