Weil am Rhein's €1.8M timber school extension breaks ground for 2027 opening
Work has started on a new timber extension for Weil am Rhein's community school. The project, costing around €1.8 million, will add modern learning spaces while meeting strict energy standards. Officials expect the building to be ready by summer 2027. The extension will use hybrid timber construction, with prefabricated wooden elements sourced from southern Germany and Austria. This approach speeds up building while reducing environmental impact. The design follows Germany's KfW-55 energy efficiency standard, meaning it will run on district heating and solar power.
Once complete, the 1,200-square-metre space will house 14 classrooms, specialised subject rooms, and a library. There will also be areas for events and independent study. The next major phase of construction begins on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Similar projects have appeared across Germany and Switzerland in recent years. Schools like the Regionale Schule 'Käthe Kollwitz' in Bützow and the Bildungscampus in Rostock have used wood-hybrid designs. Regions such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and North Rhine-Westphalia have led the way, with Austria's Zell am See also planning expansions.
The Weil am Rhein extension will provide extra capacity for students when it opens in 2027. Its energy-efficient design and timber construction reflect a growing trend in sustainable school buildings. The project adds to a wave of similar developments in Germany and neighbouring countries.
