Weekend crime spree in Hanau leaves police probing burglaries and car thefts

A series of thefts and break-ins struck the Hanau and Freigericht areas over the weekend. Police are now investigating multiple incidents, including a home burglary, stolen vehicle parts, and a car theft from a secure parking lot.

Three young suspects were also detained after a late-night altercation in Hanau’s town centre.

The first incident occurred between Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon, when thieves removed the license plates from a Toyota Auris parked on Ostheimer Straße in Nidderau. The damage was estimated at around €200.

On Saturday morning, between 11:30 AM and noon, a wallet was taken from a backpack in a café on Philipp-August-Schleifner-Weg in Hanau. The victim only noticed the theft later. That same evening, an unknown intruder broke into a detached house in Franz-Schilling-Straße, Freigericht-Neuses. Jewellery and cash were stolen before the burglar fled. Meanwhile, a Renault Clio was stolen from a gated parking lot at Kurt-Schumacher-Platz in Hanau sometime between December 15 and 19, 2025. The thief, described as a young man aged 20 to 25 wearing a tracksuit, later used the stolen vehicle to make unauthorised purchases worth several hundred euros. Early on Sunday at around 3:30 AM, three suspects—two aged 18 and one aged 17—were provisionally detained after a physical altercation on Am Markt street in Hanau. Police have not yet confirmed whether they are linked to the other incidents.

Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses in connection with the Renault Clio theft and the home burglary. The detained suspects remain in custody while investigations continue.

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
