Volunteer firefighters battle rare Heusenstamm forest fire in record time
A forest fire broke out in Heusenstamm's municipal woodland on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The blaze spread across roughly 200 square meters before firefighters brought it under control. This marked the first such incident in the area in at least five years. The fire was first reported in the early afternoon. Nearly 30 volunteer firefighters rushed to the scene under the command of Steffen Ball, who serves as both Heusenstamm's mayor and fire brigade leader. Crews initially tackled the flames with hand tools and fire-beating blankets while waiting for a steady water supply.
Once fire engines arrived, around 3,000 litres of water were used to fully extinguish the blaze. The operation wrapped up at approximately 5:10 p.m., with no injuries reported. Records show no similar forest fire callouts in Heusenstamm over the previous five years. The cause of Sunday's fire remains under investigation.
The incident required a swift response from local volunteers and emergency resources. Authorities will now review how the fire started and whether any preventative measures are needed. The affected area will also be assessed for potential environmental impact.
