Volkswagen Keeps Global Parts Supply Flowing Amid Pandemic Challenges

Volkswagen Group is maintaining its parts supply chain despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The company’s original parts center (OPC) in Kassel, Germany, continues to distribute genuine aftermarket parts to service stations worldwide. Strict safety measures have been introduced to protect both employees and customers.

The Kassel OPC usually ships around 2,000 tons of parts daily to 25,000 service centers in 86 countries. Currently, it is operating at about one-third of its normal volume, serving roughly 60% of its usual network. Volkswagen Group’s head of after sales, Roman Havlásek, confirmed that supplies remain available for essential workers, including healthcare staff and food retailers.

Inside the OPC and service centers, new precautions are in place. Employee numbers have been reduced, work procedures adjusted, and most administrative staff now work from home. Many of the 3,500 VW Group service stations in Germany—95% of which remain open—offer contactless drop-off and collection. Service personnel maintain safe distances and follow extra hygiene rules.

Ulrike Jakob, deputy chairperson of the General Works Council in Kassel, supported the company’s no-contact logistics and protective steps. Volkswagen Group is also coordinating closely with parts suppliers to manage inventory and prevent shortages at the OPC.

The carmaker’s efforts ensure that service stations stay operational while minimizing health risks. Parts continue to reach key industries, and most German locations remain accessible. The measures aim to balance supply chain stability with employee and customer safety.
