Violent robbery in Weiterstadt follows surge in online sale attacks
A 24-year-old man was violently robbed on Sunday evening near Groß-Gerauer Straße in Weiterstadt. The attack follows a worrying trend of similar incidents across the Darmstadt-Dieburg region, with at least 15 comparable cases reported in the past year alone. Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with information.
The victim had arranged to meet an unknown suspect to buy a mobile phone. When they met, the attacker suddenly grabbed the cash from the victim's hand and pushed him to the ground several times. The victim suffered minor injuries from the fall before the assailant fled on foot and later escaped in a car.
The suspect is described as around 18 years old, roughly 1.70 metres tall, with a goatee. He was wearing a cap, a vest, a black sweater, and black jeans at the time of the crime. Authorities believe the incident may be linked to a broader pattern of violent robberies targeting online mobile phone sales. According to Hesse Police, around 15 similar attacks have occurred in the past 12 months across Darmstadt-Dieburg and nearby cities like Frankfurt and Offenbach. Most involved organised groups ambushing buyers during private sales arranged online. Investigators are urging anyone with details about the case to contact the Criminal Investigation Department in Darmstadt at +49 6151 / 969 - 0.
The robbery adds to a growing number of violent thefts connected to online marketplaces in the region. Police continue to investigate the incident while seeking public assistance to identify the suspect. The victim's injuries were treated as minor, but the case remains under active review.
