Violent robbery and high-speed chase shock Gießen in early Sunday chaos
A violent robbery and a high-speed police chase took place in Gießen during the early hours of Sunday, January 18. A 38-year-old man was attacked near the Neustädter shopping centre, while later, a 23-year-old unlicensed driver fled from officers at dangerous speeds before being arrested with drugs and a weapon.
The first incident happened around 3:20 a.m., when three unknown assailants robbed a man outside the Neustädter shopping centre. They used pepper spray, causing injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment. The victim, a 38-year-old unfamiliar with the area, had his shoulder bag stolen before the attackers fled. Witnesses reported the assailants speaking Arabic as they escaped.
Later that morning, police attempted a routine stop on a Volkswagen Golf. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated away, reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h. Officers eventually apprehended the 23-year-old man, who lacked a valid driving licence. A search of the vehicle uncovered cocaine and an illegal butterfly knife. Authorities have since released the driver after processing but confirmed he now faces criminal charges. Meanwhile, the robbery victim remains in hospital, and police continue to seek witnesses or information about the three fugitives.
The two separate incidents have left one man injured and another facing legal consequences. Police are urging anyone with details about the robbery or the high-speed chase to come forward. Investigations into both cases remain ongoing.
