Vietnam's border guards tighten security with community-driven patrols near Cambodia
The Vĩnh Nương Border Station oversees a 14km stretch of Vietnam's border with Cambodia. This area faces ongoing challenges, including smuggling and illegal immigration. Authorities have strengthened patrols and cooperation to tackle these issues.
In 2024, the An Giang Border Guard—working both independently and with other agencies—detected and resolved 442 cases involving 1,144 individuals. Their efforts included enhanced patrols and better information sharing to prevent illegal activities along the border.
A key part of their strategy is the 'crime denunciation mailbox' model. This system lets local residents report suspicious border activities directly. The An Giang Provincial Border Guard Command has also prioritised inter-agency coordination, bringing together police, military, and customs to improve security.
Beyond law enforcement, the unit supports border communities. With a budget of over VNĐ7.9 billion ($300,000), they fund economic, cultural, and social projects. During festivals and holidays, they organise visits, deliver gifts, and provide care for disadvantaged families.
Public awareness is another focus. The annual 'All-People Border Guard Day' educates residents about national border security. Coordination between agencies has also helped spread knowledge of state policies among those living near the border.
The combined efforts of border guards, police, and local authorities have created a stronger security network. Residents now play an active role in reporting crimes, while community programs continue to support development in the region. These measures aim to maintain stability along the 14km border with Cambodia.
