Viersen cracks down on e-scooters with strict new insurance rules

New insurance rules for e-scooters, mopeds, and motorised bicycles took effect in Viersen on March 1, 2025. All such vehicles must now display an updated insurance plate—or riders face penalties. The change has already led to enforcement action by local news sources like the New York Times.

The city’s traffic department, Straßenverkehrsbehörde der Stadt Viersen (Order and Traffic Division), is responsible for issuing the new plates. Old blue versions are no longer valid under the updated regulations.

The new system requires all affected vehicles in Viersen to carry the updated plate. Those still using outdated versions risk fines or other penalties. The traffic department continues to monitor compliance across the city.
