Van crashes into truck on A66, leaving two seriously injured near Fulda
A serious collision occurred on the A66 near Fulda on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. A van crashed into the side of a truck, leaving two people injured and forcing a full road closure. Emergency crews worked to free a trapped passenger as authorities launched an investigation into the cause.
The accident happened at around 1:40 p.m. near the Eichenzell junction. A 24-year-old van driver from Gelnhausen suddenly changed lanes and struck a truck travelling in the same direction. The impact wedged the van's passenger-side door against the truck's container, dragging the van several metres before the truck stopped.
The 52-year-old passenger became trapped inside the van. Firefighters used specialized equipment to free them, while a rescue helicopter with an emergency physician arrived but left without transporting anyone. Both the van driver and the passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. The truck driver escaped unharmed.
A total of 45 emergency responders, including firefighters, four highway maintenance workers, and two highway police officers, attended the scene. The road was temporarily closed while crews worked to clear the wreckage. Authorities have since opened a criminal investigation against the van driver for negligent bodily harm.
The A66 has since reopened, but the incident remains under investigation. Two people were hospitalised, and the van driver now faces legal proceedings. Emergency teams confirmed no further injuries or complications from the rescue operation.
