UseTheNews Empowers Readers to Build Newsroom, Fostering Literacy and Defending Freedoms

A new initiative, UseTheNews, is empowering readers to build a newsroom, fostering news literacy and media competence among young audiences. The newsroom, aiming for 500 members by October, provides independent, fact-based reporting in English, focusing on issues like repression of queer people and women, and attacks on democratic freedoms in North Caucasus.

The initiative offers workshops and tools such as the 'Quellenchecker' to help users understand and create news content. It collaborates with media professionals to achieve this goal.

Recently, two protest organisers, Paata Manjgaladze and Lasha Beridze, were arrested. Another organiser, Paata Burchuladze, is currently in hospital. These arrests and the ongoing repression highlight the need for independent, reliable news sources like UseTheNews to inform the public and advocate for democratic freedoms.

The UseTheNews initiative is growing, seeking 500 members by October. It provides crucial, independent reporting on pressing issues in North Caucasus. The recent arrests of protest organisers underscore the importance of this newsroom's work in promoting and protecting democratic freedoms.
