US Consul General Strengthens Ties with Hanau's Military and Cultural Legacy
Brian Heath, the US Consul General to Germany, visited Hanau this week as part of a diplomatic trip. The visit highlighted ties between the city and the United States, with a focus on military history and cultural exchange. The trip began with a tour of the Hanau Military History Documentation Center at the Chariseum Wolfgang. Consul General Heath examined the permanent exhibition, which includes original artefacts, film terminals and audio recordings. The display covers the presence of US forces in Hanau from 1945 until their withdrawal in 2008, as well as the later conversion of military sites.
Margret Härtel, chair of the supporting association, along with military historian Jens Arndt and Martin Hoppe, head of the city's culture department, greeted the diplomat. Härtel also presented Heath with an invitation from Mayor Claus Kaminsky to General John Abizaid, extending a gesture of German-American friendship. The visit was timed to mark the 1998 trip by Hanau's then-mayor to the US Military Academy at West Point. Later, Heath explored the newly opened sections of Hanau's Historic Museum at Schloss Philippsruhe. These included the 'New Town Hanau' exhibit and the 'Paper Theater Museum'. His schedule concluded with a meeting at the headquarters of Heraeus Holding.
The Consul General's visit underscored the long-standing relationship between Hanau and the United States. His tour of historical and cultural sites reinforced connections between the two nations, while the invitation to General Abizaid extended the city's diplomatic outreach.
