UPS Healthcare launches Germany's first dedicated biologic logistics hub in 2023
UPS Healthcare will open its first dedicated healthcare logistics hub in Gießen, Germany, in early 2023. The new facility will serve as a key distribution point for hospitals and pharmacies across the country. It forms part of the company's push into the fast-growing market for biologic medicines.
The 24,680-square-metre site will be fully GMP- and GDP-certified. It will offer over 30,000 pallet spaces for healthcare products requiring different temperature controls. The hub's location in Gießen also provides quick access to major European ports like Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Amsterdam.
The facility aims to shorten transit times for both domestic and international shipments. Customers will benefit from extended production windows and next-day delivery to 80% of Europe. This follows the recent launch of UPS Premier in Germany, a service designed for critical healthcare deliveries.
UPS has highlighted the investment as a response to rising demand in biologic therapeutics. The global market for these treatments is forecast to hit $421.8 billion by 2025. Currently, UPS Healthcare operates similar certified sites only in Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Italy.
The Gießen hub will strengthen UPS's role in European healthcare logistics. It will provide faster, more reliable distribution for temperature-sensitive medicines. The facility is set to open in the first months of 2023.
