UnionPay’s SplendorPlus Card transforms cross-border payments for China travelers
UnionPay has launched Project Excellence to simplify cross-border payments for overseas customers visiting China. The UnionPay SplendorPlus Card, designed for foreign travellers, offers a convenient and cost-effective payment solution across the country.
The card is accepted at over 1.31 million merchants in China, catering to various needs. These include transportation, dining, shopping, and entertainment venues. This extensive network ensures cardholders have a seamless payment experience throughout their trip.
UnionPay has expanded its global reach with the SplendorPlus Card, now offered through 56 institutions across 20 markets. This expansion signifies a significant growth in UnionPay's international presence.
Cardholders benefit from a 1% cashback on transactions made via the UnionPay network in the Chinese mainland. Additionally, UnionPay has been advancing tax refund services and cross-border QR code interoperability, further enhancing the user experience.
In a notable development, UnionPay International (UPI) and Bank of China Frankfurt Branch launched the SplendorPlus Debit Card in Germany in September 2025. This marked the first issuance of the card in Europe, expanding UnionPay's services to the continent.
The UnionPay SplendorPlus Card, with its extensive acceptance network and cashback benefits, is set to make cross-border payments in China more convenient and cost-effective for overseas customers. Its launch in Germany signals UnionPay's growing global footprint, with more international travellers expected to benefit from its services.
