UnionPay Launches Europe’s First SplendorPlus Debit Card in Germany for China Travelers
UnionPay International and Bank of China Frankfurt Branch have introduced the SplendorPlus Debit Card in Germany, marking the first issuance of its kind in Europe. This card, designed for local residents traveling to China, offers a cost-effective cross-border payment solution.
Starting October 1, 2025, current dual-currency debit cards will be upgraded to the SplendorPlus Card. Cardholders can enjoy 1% cashback on transactions made via the UnionPay network in the Chinese mainland. This reward is promoted via UnionPay's mobile-based U Rewards Platform.
The SplendorPlus Card is widely accepted in China, covering over 1.31 million merchants across various venues. UnionPay has partnered with 213 offline aggregated code merchants and 166 major online platforms to support international card acceptance. This expansion is part of UnionPay International's Project Excellence, launched in 2024, aiming to develop multi-tiered, diversified payment services for overseas customers.
In Germany, UnionPay services are widely available in key tourist areas. Merchants accepting UnionPay include department stores, duty-free shops, restaurants, hotels, and car rental services. Through a partnership with Epay, UnionPay QR code payments are accepted at major retail chains like Müller, Galeria, and Heinemann duty-free shops.
The introduction of the SplendorPlus Debit Card in Germany signifies a significant step in UnionPay's global expansion. With its wide acceptance in China and growing presence in Europe, the card offers a convenient and rewarding payment solution for international travelers.
