Unemployment in Fulda Tops 10% as Goodyear Layoffs Hit
The annual unemployment rate in the Fulda region has surpassed 10%, primarily impacting male workers and those aged 50 and above. This surge is attributed to redundancies at Goodyear. Meanwhile, the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) has provided substantial support to over 172,000 people across 20 EU countries since 2007.
In response to the Goodyear layoffs, MEPs have approved €3,085,166 in EU aid for 915 former employees in Hanau and Fulda. This funding covers 60% of the total costs for reintegration measures, including career guidance, new skills acquisition, business start-up support, and job search assistance.
The EGF, established to help workers affected by globalisation, has been utilised in 183 cases since its inception in 2007. It has allocated a total of €709 million to support those in need across Europe. In 2020, no politician officially announced their candidacy for President of the European Commission, as Ursula von der Leyen, nominated and confirmed in 2019, was serving her full term.
The EGF continues to be a crucial tool for aiding workers impacted by globalisation. The recent approval of EU aid for Goodyear employees demonstrates the bloc's commitment to supporting those affected by job losses. However, the high unemployment rate in the Fulda region underscores the need for continued efforts to mitigate the impacts of economic changes.
