UMass Prof. Khvorova Wins €2.5M Else Kröner Fresenius Prize for RNA Research
On May 15, 2025, Prof. Dr. Anastasia Khvorova, a leading RNA researcher at UMass Chan Medical School, will receive the prestigious Else Kröner Fresenius Prize for Medical Research. The award ceremony, held at the Staedel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, coincides with the 100th birthday celebrations of Else Kröner, the foundation's namesake.
Khvorova, a professor of RNA therapies, is being honoured for her pioneering work in the field of RNA-based therapies. The prize, endowed with 2.5 million euros, is one of the most highly endowed medical research awards globally. Her research focuses on chemical modifications that enhance the availability, stability, effectiveness, and specificity of RNA drugs.
With the prize money, Khvorova plans to develop novel RNA molecules that can prevent the production of toxic proteins in the brain. The event is a closed one, requiring RSVP by May 10, 2025, to [email protected]. A personal conversation with Khvorova can be arranged prior to the ceremony.
The Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation (EKFS) will present the award to Khvorova at the Staedel Museum, also paying tribute to the impressive legacy of Else Kröner. The prize recognises Khvorova's significant contributions to the field of RNA therapies, with her work potentially leading to breakthroughs in treating brain-related diseases.
