Ulm Crackdown Reveals 22 Illegal Workers and 71 Labour Violations in Region's Hospitality Sector

In a recent crackdown, around 100 enforcement agents inspected numerous establishments in Ulm and surrounding areas, uncovering a range of labour violations and illegal employment practices.

The operation, led by the Ulm main customs office, targeted 38 bars, snack bars, and restaurants. It resulted in the closure of one establishment and the discovery of 22 illegal jobs. Among them were 15 suspected of working 'off the books', with unclear identities and accommodations, and some unable to speak German. Authorities also noted contradictory statements regarding employment.

During the inspections, five chefs and service staff attempted to flee but were apprehended. A total of 39 violations were found in Reutlingen and Tübingen, with 3 in the Aalen area, 11 in the Bodensee and Ravensburg districts, and 18 in Ulm. Police conducted 'ED treatments' (collection of biometric data) and seized phones. Customs officers found a total of 71 violations, including 22 illegal jobs and 14 not receiving minimum wage.

The inspections led to the checking of 171 employees and further investigations are ongoing. Several individuals had unclear identities and sleeping arrangements, and some spoke no German. The findings highlight the ongoing issue of illegal employment practices in the region's hospitality sector.
