UKW Shutdown: 2026 Marks the End for Seven Radio Stations in Hesse

Seven non-commercial local radio stations (NKLs) in Hesse will lose their FM distribution by June 30, 2026. The Media Authority of Hesse has decided to end their contracts as part of a cost-saving measure. This change comes even though FM remains widely used, especially in older cars without DAB+ receivers.

The decision affects NKLs, which provide diverse programming and platforms for underrepresented groups. Since early 2024, these stations have been broadcasting statewide on DAB+, expanding their reach beyond their former FM coverage areas.

The fate of the freed-up FM frequencies remains unclear. They could be reassigned to commercial broadcasters or left unused. Among the potential candidates for taking over these frequencies are Hessen-based stations like **Rock Antenne**, **Radio Teddy**, and **Metropol FM**, as they hold licences for additional transmission areas. Meanwhile, the public broadcasting fee will not rise until January 1, 2027. A planned increase for 2024 has been cancelled, offering temporary financial relief for listeners.

The termination of FM contracts for NKLs marks a shift in radio distribution in Hesse. While DAB+ expands their digital reach, the loss of FM could impact listeners relying on older technology. The Media Authority’s decision reflects broader changes in media funding and frequency allocation.
