Sleeping next to victim? Fatal assault trial begins - Ukrainian man on trial for fatal fight in shared German apartment

A 38-year-old man stands accused of killing another man in a shared accommodation facility in the Main-Taunus district. The two, both originally from Ukraine, had been drinking together before the violence erupted.

The incident began when the two men consumed alcohol in their apartment. An argument soon turned physical, with the defendant allegedly strangling, beating, and kicking the victim while he lay on the ground. Despite the altercation, both men later went to bed.

The next morning, a woman living in the apartment discovered her husband— the 41-year-old victim—unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. He was later pronounced dead from a brain haemorrhage.

Police arrested the defendant outside the building and placed him in pretrial detention. His lawyer claimed the victim had drunk heavily and collapsed, denying any intentional killing.

The trial is ongoing, with a verdict expected by the end of March.

The case centres on conflicting accounts of the night's events. Medical evidence confirms the victim died from severe head trauma, while the defence maintains his death was accidental. The court's decision will determine whether the defendant is convicted of the fatal attack.
