U.S. Lightning Claims Drop 16.5% to $1.04 Billion in 2024
In 2024, the U.S. saw a significant decrease in lightning-related auto insurance claims, with payouts dropping by 16.5% to $1.04 billion, according to recent data. This marks a substantial reduction from the previous year's $1.24 billion.
The total number of claims also decreased, by 21.5% to 55,537 in 2024. This is a notable shift from the peak in 2020, when nearly $2.1 billion was paid out for 71,551 claims, averaging $28,885 per claim.
Lightning causes extensive damage, with ground surges affecting electrical systems, appliances, and even structures. Some homeowners policies cover power surges resulting from direct lightning strikes. Standard insurance policies, including homeowners, condo, renters, and business, typically cover lightning-caused damage, such as fire.
More than half of the 2024 claims were filed in the top 10 states, with Florida, Texas, and California leading the list. Despite the decrease in claims and payouts, lightning remains a significant threat, causing substantial damage and financial loss.
